Mapping Calanoid Copepods in the Mediterranean countries

The MaCaCo project

The Mapping Calanoid Copepods in the Mediterranean Countries project was born with the aim of providing an easy-to-use tool for those involved in calanoid copepods ecology and zoogeography through an up-to-date database of the species known to occur in the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.

The project can work only thanks to the contributes of the interested copepodologists, willing to share their knowledge on local faunas through providing references of published papers or unpublished data and signaling the mistakes they will notice. Obviously, every contribute will be adequately acknowledged.

The MaCaCo web site

The database of the MaCaCo project is available through an interactive map ("Database"). Clicking on the name of a region will open the web page of the region itself, containing the checklist of the calanoid species to the date known from the area along with a related reference list. As calanoids seem to be unaware of political borders, the biggest islands and archipelagoes (as Sicily, Corse or the Balearic islands) will be treated separately from the mainland of the country they belong to.

The page “Books” will list the monographies dealing with circum-Mediterranean copepods, “Links” will provide links with other web-pages related with copepods and freshwater sciences.

At the end, for copepodologists’ sake, two image galleries (“Calanoid pictures” and “Calanoid habitats”) are present too.
